Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) members now have the option to delete or delink incorrect Member IDs (MIDs) linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN).
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended this facility to help employees fix errors in their accounts.
According to a circular reported by ET, EPFO has also issued a user manual to guide members through the process of removing wrong or unauthorised Member IDs.
However, this facility cannot be used in certain cases. If a withdrawal claim is already made, a claim is pending, or more than six contributions have been credited to that Member ID, then deletion will not be allowed.
Why EPFO Introduced This Facility
EPFO said that in many cases, Member IDs were created without the knowledge of employees or linked incorrectly to their UAN. These errors sometimes caused confusion in PF records.
To fix this, EPFO has allowed members to remove such incorrect IDs through a structured approval process. This helps keep PF accounts clean and accurate.
How to Submit a Request for Deletion
Employees must first log in to the EPFO Member Portal using their UAN and password. After logging in, they need to go to the “View” section and open “Service History.”
Here, all linked Member IDs will be visible along with details like company name, joining date, and leaving date. The user can select the incorrect MID and click on the “De-link” option.
Once submitted, the request is sent to the employer. The company can either approve or reject it.
What Happens After Employer Approval or Rejection
If the employer approves the request, the Member ID is removed at the company level.
If the employer rejects the request or does not respond within two weeks, the case is forwarded to the regional EPFO office.
In cases where two to six contributions exist in the account, the regional office will review the matter and make the final decision after investigation.
What is UAN?
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit unique number provided by EPFO to all salaried employees. It helps link multiple PF accounts of a person under one single identity, making management of provident fund details easier.
