Rising mobile recharge costs have become a big concern for many users. People who only need calling and SMS services are often forced to pay for expensive data plans they don’t even use.
Now, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is stepping in to fix this problem with a new proposal that could bring major relief.
TRAI’s Big Move to Reduce Mobile Costs
TRAI has released a draft proposal asking telecom companies to introduce plans that include only calling and SMS, without any data.
The idea is simple — give users more choice and stop forcing them to pay for services they don’t need.
This move is expected to benefit:
Rural users
Senior citizens
Feature phone users
For the first time, users may get affordable voice and SMS plans for different validity periods like 28, 56, or 84 days.
What Changes for Mobile Users?
If this proposal is approved, telecom companies such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea will have to offer Voice + SMS-only plans alongside their regular recharge options.
Here’s what users can expect:
Separate plans for calls and SMS only (no data)
Options available for all validity periods (28, 56, 84 days)
Lower prices compared to current data plans
Clear visibility of these plans on apps, websites, and retail stores
Right now, most voice-only plans either come with long validity (like 84 or 365 days) or are priced higher despite not offering data. TRAI wants to change this.
Impact on Telecom Companies
This new rule will directly affect telecom operators. They will need to redesign their existing plans and introduce new Voice + SMS-only packs.
This means:
More plan options for users
Increased competition among telecom companies
Better pricing and transparency
TRAI has invited public suggestions on this proposal until April 28, 2026.
