Govt Offers ₹40,000 to Protect Crops from Stray Animals

The government of Rajasthan runs a special scheme to help farmers protect their crops from stray animals.

Known as the Kantedar Tarbandi Yojana, the programme provides financial support for building barbed wire fencing around farmland.

The scheme was launched in July 2017 by the state’s Agriculture Department.

Its main goal is simple: help farmers prevent animals from entering their fields and damaging crops.

Under the scheme, the government pays 50 percent of the cost of fencing, up to a maximum subsidy of ₹40,000.

The assistance covers fencing for up to 400 running metres of farmland boundary.

For example, if fencing your field costs ₹60,000, the government will pay ₹30,000 and the farmer pays the rest.

If the total cost is ₹80,000 or more, the subsidy is still limited to ₹40,000.

For small farmers, this support can make a big difference because a proper fence protects crops season after season.

Who Can Apply for the Scheme

The eligibility rules depend on whether a farmer is applying individually or as part of a group.

If you are applying as an individual farmer, you must have at least 1.5 hectares of agricultural land in one location.

However, in Scheduled Tribe areas, the minimum requirement is lower — just 0.5 hectares of land.

This makes the scheme easier to access for farmers in tribal regions.

Farmers can also apply as a group. In that case, at least 10 farmers must come together, with a combined landholding of more than 5 hectares.

Documents Required for Application

The paperwork required for the scheme is relatively simple.

Farmers need to provide:

Aadhaar card

Jan Aadhaar card

Jamabandi (land ownership record issued within the last six months)

Bank account passbook

These basic documents are enough to submit the application.

How Farmers Can Apply

Farmers can apply for the scheme either online or offline.

The online application can be completed through the RajKisan Saathi Portal.

To apply online:

Why This Scheme Is Important for Farmers

Many government agriculture schemes focus on seeds, fertilisers, or farm loans.

But this scheme focuses on something just as important — protecting crops that farmers have already grown.

In many parts of Rajasthan, stray animals such as nilgai often enter fields and destroy crops overnight.

Even after months of hard work, farmers can lose their entire harvest.

A barbed wire fence may seem simple, but it can protect crops for years.

For farmers who depend on each harvest for income, this protection can mean the difference between earning money from their crops or losing everything.

The biggest challenge is that many eligible farmers are still not aware of the scheme.

Increasing awareness could help more farmers benefit from this government support.
