UK introduces Mandatory ETA for International Travelers

The United Kingdom has introduced new travel rules for international visitors.

From 25 February 2026, travelers from 85 visa-exempt countries—including the US, Canada, and France—must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the country.

Travelers without an ETA will not be allowed to board their flight unless they are exempt.

An ETA is a digital permission to travel for tourism, visiting family, or short-term business, valid for up to six months.

It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK, but it authorizes you to travel there.

Who Needs an ETA?

Visa-exempt travelers: Anyone from eligible countries must get an ETA before boarding.

Transit passengers: Travelers connecting through UK airports like Heathrow and Manchester who go through UK passport control also need an ETA.

Those not passing through passport control are exempt.

British and Irish citizens: Do not require an ETA.

Dual British nationals must present a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement costing £589.

Note for Indian travelers: India is not visa-exempt, so Indian nationals still need a UK visa.

In addition, they must now apply for an ETA for visits up to six months.

Applying for an ETA is quick and simple, and most applications are processed in minutes.

You can apply:
