The picture for Indians planning international travel in 2026 has changed slightly. While the Indian passport has climbed in global rankings, entry rules in some countries have become stricter.
India now holds the 80th position in the Henley Passport Index 2026, showing an improvement from last year.
However, this update also brings a key change for travellers: the number of countries allowing visa-free or easy entry for Indian passport holders has decreased.
Previously, Indians could travel to 57 countries without much hassle. In 2026, this number has dropped to 55 countries, as Iran and Bolivia have changed their entry rules.
Iran Ends Visa-Free Access
Iran no longer allows visa-free entry for Indian citizens. Reports from late 2025 revealed that some Indians were lured to Iran for jobs or transit and faced kidnapping and ransom situations.
Due to these security concerns, Iran stopped visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders from November 2025. Now, a visa is mandatory for travel or transit in Iran.
Earlier Situation:
Until 2025, Indians could visit Iran without a visa for a limited time, though some documentation and stay restrictions applied. This facility has now been completely removed.
Bolivia Introduces E-Visa Requirement
Bolivia has also tightened its rules for Indian travellers. Starting in 2026, Indians must obtain an e-visa online before traveling.
The process requires submitting a digital form, uploading necessary documents, and paying the online fee. The visa is issued electronically and must be presented at the airport.
Earlier Situation:
In 2025, Bolivia allowed visa on arrival for Indians. This made it easy to travel there without prior approval. That convenience is no longer available.
What This Means for Indian Travellers
With changes in Iran and Bolivia, Indian travellers need to plan ahead for these destinations in 2026. While the passport ranking shows improvement, checking the latest visa rules has become more important than ever.
