In today’s digital age, UPI payments have become a part of daily life, whether for grocery shopping or paying bills.
But mistakes happen, and money can sometimes be sent to the wrong UPI ID.
While this can be stressful, the good news is that funds can often be recovered if you act quickly.
Step 1: Secure Your Transaction Details
As soon as you notice the mistake, save the transaction receipt.
This receipt contains important information such as:
Transaction ID
UTR number
Date of payment
Amount transferred
These details are essential when reporting the issue to your UPI app or bank.
Step 2: Contact Your UPI App’s Customer Support
Next, reach out to the customer support of the app you used—such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM.
Explain that the money was sent to the wrong account and provide all transaction details.
The support team will verify the complaint.
Once verified, the app escalates the case to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI transactions.
NPCI then contacts the receiving bank to initiate a reversal if the error is confirmed.
Step 3: Escalate to NPCI if Needed
If the app or bank does not respond satisfactorily, you can file a complaint directly with NPCI.
Go to NPCI’s official website and register a complaint under the Dispute Redressal Mechanism.
You’ll need to provide:
Transaction ID and UTR
Amount sent
Sender’s and recipient’s UPI IDs
NPCI will investigate by obtaining information from the concerned bank.
If the transaction is proven to be an error, the bank is instructed to refund the money.
By following these steps promptly, UPI payment mistakes can often be corrected without legal hassles, ensuring your money is safely returned.
