The number of electric vehicles in India is growing rapidly, but their almost silent operation has created new road safety concerns.
To address this issue, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has taken an important step.
A new draft notification states that all new electric vehicle models launched from October 1, 2026, must be equipped with AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alert System).
Additionally, all electric passenger and commercial vehicles currently on sale must be upgraded with this system by October 1, 2027.
Why Is the AVAS System Important?
Electric vehicles are quieter than petrol and diesel vehicles, especially at low speeds.
This silence can make it difficult for pedestrians, cyclists, and two-wheeler riders to sense an approaching EV, increasing the chances of accidents at low speeds.
AVAS helps solve this problem.
When an EV slows below 20 km/h or moves in reverse, the system produces an AI-generated sound that nearby people can easily hear. This sound automatically stops once the vehicle picks up speed.
Where Will This Rule Apply?
The new regulation applies to electric vehicles in the M and N categories:
M Category: Electric cars, vans, buses, and all passenger vehicles
N Category: Electric trucks and cargo vehicles
This means that all small and large electric SUVs, cars, and commercial EVs will soon have AVAS as a standard feature.
However, electric scooters, e-rickshaws, and three-wheelers are currently not included in this rule.
Global Importance of AVAS
A report from the US Department of Transportation states that electric vehicles pose 20% more risk to pedestrians compared to fuel-powered vehicles—and this risk increases to 50% at low speeds.
Because of these findings, countries such as the US, Japan, and those in Europe have already made AVAS mandatory.
India’s decision aligns its safety standards with these global practices.
Electric Cars in India Already Offering AVAS
Several newly launched electric cars in India already come equipped with AVAS. These include:
MG Comet
Tata Curvv EV
Hyundai Creta Electric
Mahindra XEV 9e
Mahindra BE 6
In these vehicles, the AVAS system alerts pedestrians in advance, helping to greatly reduce the chances of accidents.
