A passport is one of the most important documents for international travel and for proving your identity as an Indian citizen.
The Government of India has now upgraded the system by launching the Passport Seva Program (V2.0).
Under this program, e-passports with built-in security chips will be issued across the country.
These e-passports will make the document more secure and speed up the immigration process at airports.
Many people are now wondering whether their old passports will still work.
The answer is yes.
Old passports will remain valid until their expiry date.
After they expire, the new chip-enabled passport will be issued during renewal.
Are Old Passports Still Valid?
If you already have a regular (non-chip) passport, you can continue using it without any problem.
It will remain valid until the date mentioned on it.
Once your passport expires, you will receive a chip-enabled e-passport when you apply for renewal.
New applicants will also get e-passports automatically.
There is no need to fill out new forms or choose any special option for it.
The government has taken this step to strengthen passport security.
At the same time, the immigration process at airports will become quicker for those holding the new e-passports.
What’s Special About the New E-Passports?
Under the Passport Seva Program V2.0 and the Global Passport Seva Program, all new passports and renewals will now be issued as e-passports.
The upgrade happens automatically during the application process.
These e-passports come with a small golden symbol on the cover.
Inside it is an RFID chip that securely stores the passport holder’s biometric and personal details.
This new feature ensures stronger security and a smoother travel experience for Indian citizens.
