Getting a passport will now be much easier for people living in Kargil and nearby areas.
A new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) has been opened in Kargil, meaning residents no longer need to travel long distances to Leh or Srinagar for passport-related services.
The centre was inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena.
No More Long Trips to Leh or Srinagar
The new POPSK has been opened at the Kargil Sub Post Office through a joint initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Posts.
It is the second POPSK in Ladakh, after Leh, where the passport centre has been operating since 2017.
It is also the 457th Post Office Passport Seva Kendra in India.
For years, people in Kargil had to travel to Leh or even Srinagar to access passport services. This meant spending extra time and money on travel.
The new centre brings these services closer to home, which is expected to make the process more convenient for residents of Kargil and surrounding areas.
Government Focuses on Easier Access to Services
Speaking at the inauguration, Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena said the new centre is another step toward bringing important government services closer to the people of Ladakh.
He said the facility is expected to provide efficient, transparent and hassle-free passport services to residents.
The initiative also addresses a long-standing demand from people in Kargil who wanted passport services to be available locally.
Passport Services to Reach More Remote Areas
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the Kargil POPSK is part of the government’s wider effort to take passport services to remote and underserved areas.
The goal is to make passport services more accessible and convenient for citizens, regardless of where they live.
For Kargil residents, the biggest change is simple: a long journey for passport-related work is no longer necessary.
With the new POPSK now operational, residents can access important passport services much closer to home, saving both time and travel costs.
