State-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has brought a big gift for its users.
Now, BSNL customers can make voice calls without a mobile network.
The company has launched its new VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi) service, which allows users to make calls using a Wi-Fi connection instead of the mobile network.
With this, BSNL has come on par with private telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea, who already offer this service.
BSNL’s Network Expansion and New Services
Recently, BSNL expanded its 4G network by installing more than 1 lakh mobile towers across the country.
The company also plans to add about 97,500 more towers in the coming days.
The launch of VoWiFi is seen as another big milestone, especially as BSNL celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The service was soft-launched on October 2 by Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
At present, it is available only in the South and West telecom circles, but will soon be expanded nationwide.
In addition, BSNL has recently launched 4G and eSIM services in Mumbai, after first rolling them out in Tamil Nadu.
How the VoWiFi Service Works
This service is especially helpful in areas with weak mobile networks. By connecting to their home Wi-Fi or broadband, users will be able to make clear and stable calls without interruptions.
To use it, customers need a smartphone that supports VoWiFi—a feature already available in most new Android and iPhone models.
Free for All BSNL Customers
BSNL has confirmed that the VoWiFi service will be completely free. Customers will not be charged any extra money for calls.
The company also announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that the service will improve connectivity and calling experience at no additional cost.
Competing with Private Telecom Players
With this launch, BSNL is now in direct competition with private telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vi.
Since they already provide Wi-Fi calling, BSNL’s entry into this space marks a big step forward in modernizing its services and strengthening its presence in the Indian telecom market.
