Govt Announces ₹6,908 Diwali Bonus for Employees– Who Gets It?

Bringing festive cheer to thousands of government staff, the central government has approved a non-productivity-linked ad-hoc bonus for the financial year 2024-25.

According to an official memorandum from the Ministry of Finance, all Group C employees and non-gazetted Group B employees of the central government will receive a bonus equal to 30 days’ salary as a goodwill gesture.

This annual announcement, usually made before Durga Puja and Diwali, has become a tradition to reward employees during the festive season.

It is expected to benefit a large number of central government workers across departments.

How Much Will Employees Receive?

The bonus has been fixed at ₹6,908 per employee. This figure is based on a salary ceiling of ₹7,000 per month for average emoluments.

Computation formula:
Bonus = ₹7,000 × 30 / 30.4 = ₹6,907.89 → rounded off to ₹6,908

Employees earning below the ceiling will have their bonus calculated according to their actual salary.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, employees must meet these conditions:

Must be in service on March 31, 2025

Must have worked continuously for at least 6 months during FY 2024-25

Employees who served less than 12 months will get the bonus on a pro-rata basis

The bonus also applies to:

CAPF and armed forces personnel

Employees of Union Territory administrations that follow the central pay structure

Employees on deputation, who will be paid by the organization where they are currently posted

Bonus for Casual Labourers

Casual labourers with at least 240 days of continuous service per year (or 206 days in case of a 5-day week) for 3 consecutive years will receive a bonus of ₹1,184.

Economic and Social Impact

The government hopes this move will boost consumer spending and lift morale ahead of the festive season.

By putting extra money in the hands of employees, the bonus is expected to increase demand in retail, travel, and essential goods sectors, giving a push to the economy.
