Aadhaar Update Limits: How Often Can You Change Name, DOB, and Address?

New Delhi: Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government.

It’s used as an identity proof for many services like opening a bank account, applying for a passport, or getting a driving licence.

If your personal details change over time, you’re allowed to update your Aadhaar card—but there are limits on how often you can make these changes. Here’s a simple breakdown:

Name Change on Aadhaar

You can update your name up to two times. If you need to change it a third time, it’s only allowed in exceptional cases and requires approval from your local UIDAI regional office.

Valid reasons for name updates include:

  • Minor spelling corrections (if the pronunciation stays the same)

  • Rearranging name order

  • Expanding initials to full names

  • Name changes after marriage

Each update costs ₹50, and you can update two details (such as name and gender) in a single request for the same fee.

Date of Birth (DoB) Update

You can update your date of birth only once.

If you need to change it again for a valid reason, UIDAI may allow it through an exception process.

If your request is rejected:

You can call the UIDAI helpline at 1947

Or email: help@uidai.gov.in
Make sure to provide your Update Request Number (URN) and contact details. Ask for an “exception update” so your case can be reviewed.

Photograph Update

You can update your Aadhaar photo any number of times—there’s no limit.

When you first apply for Aadhaar, submitting a photo is required. If you want to update it later:

You must visit an Aadhaar enrollment center in person

Biometric updates, including photo and fingerprints, cannot be done online

Address Update

You can update your Aadhaar address as many times as needed—there’s no limit.

UIDAI provides a convenient way to do this through its online Self-Service Update Portal:
ssup.uidai.gov.in

This lets you update your address from home, without going to a physical centre.
