Starting July 1, 2025, Axis Bank will increase its ATM transaction charges. Customers who exceed their free transaction limit will now have to pay ₹23 per transaction, instead of the current ₹21.
This change will affect savings account holders, NRI accounts, trust accounts, and some priority and Burgundy customers.
The new charge applies to both Axis Bank ATMs and other banks’ ATMs, with taxes added separately.
New Rules from RBI and What They Mean
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a notification on March 28, 2025, allowing ATM networks to set the interchange fee.
From May 1, 2025, banks can charge customers up to ₹23 for ATM withdrawals beyond the free limit.
These charges also apply to Cash Recycler Machines (except for cash deposits).
What is ATM Interchange Fee?
It is the fee one bank pays another for allowing its customer to use that bank’s ATM. For example, if an HDFC Bank customer uses an SBI ATM, HDFC pays SBI. This cost may be passed on to the customer.
Free Transaction Limits as per RBI (from May 1, 2025)
Metro cities: 3 free ATM transactions per month
Non-metro cities: 5 free ATM transactions per month
ATM Charges by Other Banks
HDFC Bank
Metro cities: 3 free transactions
Non-metro cities: 5 free transactions
After that: ₹23 for cash withdrawals and ₹8.50 + taxes for non-financial transactions
SBI (from February 1, 2025)
5 free transactions at SBI ATMs
10 free transactions at other bank ATMs
This applies to all customers, regardless of balance or location
Tips for Customers
If you frequently withdraw cash from ATMs, it’s important to keep track of your free transaction limits.
To avoid extra charges, consider using digital payment methods, UPI, or net banking.
These changes will especially affect customers who rely heavily on cash, so it’s wise to plan your ATM use and prioritize digital alternatives.
