The goal of this scheme is to provide quick and high-quality medical care to people injured in road accidents, so their lives can be saved through timely treatment.
Under this scheme, any road accident victim will get free treatment worth up to ₹1.5 lakh.
The most important part is that for the first 7 days, treatment in any selected government or private hospital will be completely free. There is no need for insurance or any paperwork for this.
Who can get the benefit of this scheme?
This scheme is available to any person injured in a road accident in India, whether in a city, village, or state. It applies to everyone—Indian citizens or foreign tourists.
The best part is that factors like caste, income, insurance status, or state will not affect eligibility.
Where and how will the treatment be given?
Free treatment will only be available at hospitals that are authorized by the government. A list of such hospitals will be released and updated regularly.
If the victim is first taken to a non-listed hospital, they will receive basic (initial) treatment there.
Then, they will be shifted to the nearest listed hospital where full treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh will be given for 7 days.
Who is managing the scheme and how?
The National Health Authority (NHA) is running the scheme, while in each state, the State Road Safety Council and State Health Agencies will handle it.
A special 11-member high-level committee, led by India’s Road Secretary, has also been set up.
This committee will keep track of how the scheme is working and make sure no one is left without treatment.
Why was this scheme launched?
Road accidents in India are a serious issue. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari shared that in 2023, there were around 4.80 lakh road accidents in India, which caused 1.72 lakh deaths.
Many of these people died because they did not receive timely treatment. This scheme aims to fix that problem so that no injured person is left without medical help.
