Now, reading long emails on Gmail is easier than ever. Gmail is introducing an AI-powered summaries feature to help users save time.
This new feature provides a concise summary of long emails and is part of the Gemini side panel on the web.
It is being rolled out to Gmail for both Android and iOS users, but it’s only available for paying customers.
How the Summarize Feature Works
A screenshot shared by 9-to-5 Gmail shows that the summarize button appears automatically in long threads with at least two emails, not in single-thread emails.
This helps in summarizing long discussions without missing important points. After tapping the Summarize button, a summary is generated in bullet points within a few seconds. This summary is displayed in a sheet that slides up from the bottom of the screen.
Users can swipe down on the sheet to see the recent summary and expand it to full screen for easier viewing.
The feature is starting to roll out today and will be fully available in the coming weeks. Google also plans to launch Gmail Q&A and Contextual Smart Reply next month to further enhance the email experience.
Gemini Side Panel Features
Gemini Web is also introducing a new AI-powered side panel feature on Gmail, based on Gemini 1.5 Pro.
This side panel can summarize email threads, suggest responses, help draft emails, and find specific information from emails or Google Drive files.
Users can access these features by tapping the Gemini Sparkle icon in the top-right corner.
Here are some tasks you can do with the side panel:
Docs: Gemini tools help write and refine content, create summaries, brainstorm ideas, and generate content based on other files.
Gmail: Gemini can summarize email threads, suggest responses, draft emails, and find specific information from emails or Google Drive files.
Drive: This tool provides summaries of documents, quick facts about projects, and in-depth research without needing to click through multiple documents.
Slides: It can create new slides, custom images, and presentation summaries.
Sheets: The Sheets side panel helps track and organize data, create tables and formulas, and provide task-specific guidance.
These features are available to users with Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons, and Google One AI Premium.
This rollout aims to help manage emails more efficiently, giving users more time to focus on important tasks.
