The Indian Embassy in Thailand has advised travelers to avoid visiting seven provinces due to rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia over a long-standing border dispute.
The advisory lists the following provinces to avoid: Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
The embassy issued the warning after border tensions between the two countries escalated on Thursday.
In a post on its official X account, the embassy wrote:
“In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travelers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom.”
The post also linked to an update by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), which included the seven provinces and listed specific areas within them to avoid.
According to TAT, the restricted zones include:
Phanom Swai Forest Park
Chong Sai Taku
Ta Phraya National Park
Chong Sa-ngam
TAT explained that recent cross-border security incidents have led the Royal Thai Army to temporarily close several border checkpoints and tourist spots to maintain safety and national security.
In its official statement on X, TAT mentioned that security forces are actively monitoring the situation, and international travelers are encouraged to follow updates from official channels.
The Thai interior minister said the conflict has affected over 100,000 people in border regions and caused the deaths of 14 individuals.
This marks a major escalation of a border dispute that had been largely settled by a 2013 UN court ruling.
However, tensions rose again after a Cambodian soldier was killed in May during a clash. Following the incident, Thailand expelled Cambodia’s ambassador and recalled its own envoy.
