UPI payments have become extremely popular in India and are now being used in many countries around the world.
They are fast, easy, and convenient.
But sometimes, mistakes happen.
You may enter the wrong UPI ID, make a typing error, or select the wrong contact.
Within seconds, the money gets transferred — and there is no “undo” option.
So what should you do if this happens? Acting quickly is very important.
First Try the Simple Way
Before taking formal steps, try the easiest solution.
If you have the receiver’s details, contact them and explain the situation.
In many cases, people return the money if they understand it was sent by mistake.
But if the person does not respond or refuses to return the money, you will need to take further action.
Inform Your Bank Without Delay
As soon as you notice the mistake, inform your bank immediately.
Use your UPI app’s “Report Issue” option or contact customer support.
This creates an official record of your complaint, which can help later.
You can also raise a complaint through the BHIM app or the National Payments Corporation of India portal.
This ensures your issue is recorded in the system properly.
Escalate the Complaint If Needed
If you don’t get a solution, take the next step.
Contact your bank’s grievance department or nodal officer.
Every bank has a system to handle such complaints.
Even if it feels repetitive, this step is important.
It strengthens your case if you need to escalate it further.
Take the Matter Outside the Bank
If the bank is unable to help, you can file a complaint with the Reserve Bank of India Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
You can do this through the Complaint Management System.
This is an independent authority that reviews your case.
Understand the Limits
Even after following all steps, there is no guarantee you will get your money back.
If the receiver refuses to return the money and there is no fraud or technical error, the bank cannot reverse the transaction.
In such cases, it may become a legal issue.
Prevention Is Always Better
The best way to avoid this problem is to be careful while making payments.
Always double-check the UPI ID and name before sending money.
For large amounts, send a small test payment first.
