1 Crore Facebook Accounts Deleted — Here’s Why

To remove fake accounts and spam content, Facebook has deleted around 1 crore profiles in the first half of 2025.

Meta took this step to reduce spam and improve the quality of Facebook feeds. Many big content creators who used spammy tactics were also removed.

The goal is to make Facebook more authentic by removing accounts involved in spam, including those using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to create content.

What Meta Said

In a recent blog post, Meta explained that it wants to promote original posts by creators and is taking stronger action against spammy accounts.

Around 5 lakh accounts involved in fake or spammy behavior had their comments and content reach reduced. This makes it harder for these accounts to earn money from their posts.

Meta defines inauthentic content as when photos or videos are reused without crediting the original creator. Meta now has technology that detects duplicate videos and limits their spread.

Wider Efforts on AI and Spam

This crackdown comes as Meta increases its investment in AI technology. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to spend billions on AI infrastructure to launch the company’s first AI supercluster next year.

Facebook isn’t alone—YouTube has also updated its rules for monetization due to the rise of AI and spam content.

AI tools are making it easier to create content on a large scale, which increases spam and low-quality posts across social media.

Many platforms are now working to fight this problem and improve content quality.
