X is making a major change to how creators earn money on the platform.
The company is shutting down its existing Creator Revenue Share Program and replacing it with a new system focused on original content.
New sign-ups for the old program were stopped on August 7.
Creators will stop earning through the program after September 7, while the final payment is scheduled to be issued on September 11.
How Did X’s Revenue Program Work?
Under the old Creator Revenue Share Program, eligible users could earn money based on the reach and engagement their posts received. Generally, higher engagement meant better earning opportunities.
Creators also needed to meet X’s eligibility requirements, including having a Premium subscription.
However, X found that the program was not always encouraging the type of content it wanted on the platform.
Why Is X Ending the Program?
According to X’s Head of Creators, Allegra Jacchia, the incentive system had some problems.
Some creators were reposting or reusing other people’s content instead of producing original work to increase their earnings.
X could have introduced stricter rules under the existing program, but the company decided to replace it with a new system instead.
Eligible creators under the old program are expected to receive payouts on August 14 and August 28.
The final payment covering eligible earnings up to September 7 will be issued on September 11.
What Is the New Original Content Rewards Program?
X is replacing its old revenue-sharing system with the Original Content Rewards Program.
As the name suggests, the new program will focus more heavily on rewarding creators who produce original content.
Creators may be rewarded for original ideas, expertise, reporting, commentary and other creative work. This can include videos, threads, memes, photos, graphics, illustrations, analysis and reactions.
Content that creatively transforms someone else’s work through commentary, narration, humor or significant editing may also qualify as original.
Simply reposting or reusing another creator’s content, however, will not qualify for revenue.
Eligible creators will receive payments every 15 days based on the impressions generated by their qualifying original content.
Who Can Join the New X Creator Program?
For now, participation is limited to eligible creators who were already part of X’s previous revenue-sharing program.
Creators must be at least 18 years old and live in a country where the program is available.
They also need a personal or business account with an eligible X Premium subscription.
To qualify, an account must have at least 500 verified followers and receive 500,000 home timeline impressions from verified users during the previous 90 days. Creators must also regularly publish original content.
Applications can be submitted through Creator Studio. If an application or appeal is rejected, creators may be able to apply again after 90 days.
What Does This Mean for X Creators?
The biggest change is that X is shifting its focus from general engagement to originality. Creators who produce their own reporting, videos, commentary, analysis or other creative work could benefit from the new system.
For creators who mainly rely on reposting or recycling other users’ content, earning money on X could become much more difficult.
