India’s biggest dairy brand, Amul, has increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre across the country from May 14, 2026.
The price hike applies to several popular milk variants sold by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the company behind the Amul brand.
For millions of households already dealing with rising food prices, the increase is likely to add more pressure to monthly grocery bills.
Why Amul Increased Milk Prices
This is the first major Amul milk price hike in almost a year. The previous revision happened in May 2025.
According to GCMMF, the increase was necessary because of rising operational costs, including:
Higher cattle feed prices
Increased fuel costs
Expensive packaging materials
Rising milk procurement prices paid to farmers
The company said the overall price increase is around 2.5% to 3.5%, which it claims is still lower than average food inflation levels.
Amul also stated that nearly 80 paise from every rupee paid by consumers goes directly to milk producers.
New Amul Milk Prices Effective May 14
Several popular Amul milk packs are now more expensive.
Here are the revised prices:
Amul Taaza (500 ml): ₹29 from ₹28
Amul Gold (500 ml): ₹35 from ₹34
Amul Cow Milk (500 ml): ₹30 from ₹29
Amul Shakti (500 ml): ₹32 from ₹31
Amul Buffalo Milk (500 ml): ₹39 from ₹37
Tea Special (1 litre): ₹66 from ₹63
While the increase may look small per packet, the impact becomes noticeable over a full month for regular consumers.
Mother Dairy Has Also Raised Prices
Amul is not the only dairy company increasing prices.
Mother Dairy has also raised milk prices by ₹2 per litre from May 14 across several variants.
Industry experts believe other regional dairy brands and cooperative milk unions may also follow with similar hikes in the coming weeks.
Why This Matters for Every Household
Milk is one of the most commonly used daily essentials in India. Even a small increase affects millions of families.
Milk is used daily for:
Tea and coffee
Curd and paneer
Sweets and desserts
Cooking
Infant nutrition
Because of this, the latest hike could impact:
Household grocery budgets
Tea stalls and cafes
Restaurants and bakeries
Sweet shops
Dairy-based businesses
Inflation Pressure Could Increase Further
The timing of the milk price hike is important because India is already dealing with:
Rising food inflation
Higher transportation costs
Expensive crude oil
Currency pressure
Experts believe higher dairy prices could add further pressure to retail inflation in the coming months.
For consumers, however, the effect is immediate.
From the morning cup of tea to everyday kitchen expenses, daily life is about to get a little more expensive once again.
