Apple Shifts iPhone 17 Production to India, Scaling Back in China

In a significant development, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed Apple’s ambitious plan to expand iPhone manufacturing in India.

The Cupertino tech giant is not only increasing its iPhone production in India but is also set to launch the highly anticipated iPhone 17, produced entirely on Indian soil, expected to hit global markets in 2025.

A Decline in Chinese Production Predicted

Kuo’s Medium post highlights that Apple’s key manufacturing partner, Foxconn, currently responsible for approximately 80% of iPhone production in India, is poised to reduce production in two regions of China.

This includes a 45% reduction in Zhengzhou and an even more significant 85% decrease in Taiyuan during the upcoming year.

As of now, 14% of iPhone units shipped globally, including the iPhone 15, are manufactured in India, and Kuo predicts that this share will increase to 20-25% by 2024.

iPhone 17: An Indian Innovation

In a groundbreaking move, the iPhone 17 is set to become the first Apple model developed outside China.

Apple is embarking on the New Product Introduction (NPI) process for the iPhone 17 in India, scheduled for the second half of 2024.

The iPhone 17 is anticipated to make its debut in the international market in the latter half of 2025.

Tata Electronics: Pioneering Indian Assembly

In a recent development, Taiwan’s Wistron approved the sale of its entire indirect stake in Wistron Infocom Manufacturing to Tata Electronics for approximately $125 million (around Rs 1,040 crore).

With this acquisition, Tata Electronics will become the first Indian company to assemble Apple’s iPhone models within the country.
