Overnight train journeys in India could soon get a major upgrade.
Indian Railways is preparing to add more than 250 new Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets to its fleet.
The move could change how passengers travel long distances overnight.
These modern trains are expected to bring higher speeds, better comfort and advanced safety features to routes that are currently served by Rajdhani and other premium trains.
Vande Bharat Is Moving Beyond Daytime Travel
Vande Bharat trains were initially known mainly for fast daytime journeys between major cities.
That changed in January 2026, when the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service was introduced.
Now, with more than 250 trainsets planned, Indian Railways is looking to take the sleeper version to many more long-distance routes.
Trains Designed for Speed and Comfort
The new sleeper trains are designed to reach speeds of up to 180 kmph, while their operating speed can be up to 160 kmph depending on the railway track and route conditions.
The initial sleeper configuration has 16 coaches and can carry around 823 passengers.
Passengers will get AC First Class, AC Two-Tier and AC Three-Tier accommodation.
The coaches will also feature automatic doors, wider gangways, improved suspension and specially designed berths aimed at making overnight travel more comfortable.
Aircraft-Like Features on a Train?
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is being positioned as a premium alternative to traditional overnight trains.
Passengers can expect features such as better luggage storage, USB charging points, modern toilets and modular pantries.
There will also be dedicated spaces for passengers with disabilities.
CCTV cameras will monitor the coaches, while emergency talk-back systems will allow passengers to contact train staff when needed.
Advanced fire detection and suppression systems will add another layer of safety.
Kavach Will Add Another Safety Layer
Safety is another major focus of the new sleeper trains.
The trainsets are equipped with Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system.
They also include automatic doors, anti-climbing features, CCTV cameras, fire-safety systems and emergency communication facilities.
The trains use regenerative braking, which can help improve energy efficiency during operations.
Could Overnight Travel Become Much Faster?
The first sleeper service gives an idea of what passengers could experience.
On the Howrah-Kamakhya route, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to cover the roughly 966-km journey in around 14 hours.
In comparison, the Saraighat Express takes around 17 hours.
A combination of faster travel and proper sleeping accommodation could make these trains a stronger alternative to both conventional overnight trains and, on some routes, domestic flights.
Rajdhani Trains Could Face New Competition
For decades, Rajdhani trains have been among India’s most important premium long-distance services.
The arrival of a large Vande Bharat sleeper fleet could change that market.
Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are being built around newer technology, modern interiors and faster acceleration.
However, their actual advantage will depend on several factors, including fares, railway infrastructure, routes and operating speeds.
A Big Shift for Indian Railways
The planned expansion is part of Indian Railways’ wider push to modernise passenger travel.
If the rollout goes as planned, more travellers could soon have access to faster and more comfortable overnight train journeys.
The biggest question now is not whether Vande Bharat Sleeper can compete with premium trains.
It is how quickly the 250+ new trainsets can be introduced and which routes get them first.
For passengers, one thing is clear: India’s overnight rail travel could look very different in the coming years.
