ESIC Funeral Aid Increased to ₹20,000, giving eligible families of deceased insured employees an additional ₹5,000 to help cover funeral expenses.

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has raised the assistance from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 under a notification issued in October 2026.

The revised amount is intended to provide financial support to families dealing with the expenses that follow the death of an insured employee.

Although the notification was issued on October 7 and published in the Gazette on October 16, 2026, the increased benefit is effective retrospectively from May 8, 2026.

ESIC Funeral Aid Increased to ₹20,000: What Changed?

Under the revised provision, the funeral assistance payable for an eligible insured person has increased by ₹5,000. This represents an increase of approximately 33.3% over the previous amount of ₹15,000.

The change has been notified under Section 32(1)(f) of the Code on Social Security, 2020, read with Rule 21 of the Social Security (Central) Rules, 2026.

The notification fixes the payable funeral expense amount at ₹20,000.

The revised benefit is particularly relevant to families of employees covered under the ESIC insurance scheme. The assistance is intended to help meet funeral-related expenses following the insured person’s death.

The notification’s effective date is May 8, 2026, even though it was formally issued and published several months later.

Eligible claimants should therefore refer to the applicable rules and official notification when checking their entitlement.

Who Can Claim the ₹20,000 Funeral Assistance?

The benefit is intended for eligible claimants following the death of an insured person covered under the relevant social security provisions.

It is not an automatic payment to every private-sector employee’s family, as the deceased person must meet the applicable ESIC eligibility conditions.

Under the provisions governing the benefit, the amount is generally payable to the eldest surviving member of the deceased insured person’s family.

Where the deceased person had no family, or was not living with the family at the time of death, the applicable provisions allow payment to the person who actually incurred the funeral expenses.

Families should check the relevant ESIC requirements before submitting a claim. The applicable documentation and claim procedure should be confirmed through the relevant ESIC office or official guidance.

The increase means eligible claimants may receive ₹5,000 more than under the earlier funeral assistance amount. However, the revised rate does not remove the need to establish eligibility under the scheme.

When Did the New ESIC Funeral Benefit Take Effect?

ESIC issued the notification on October 7, 2026, and it was published in the Gazette of India on October 16, 2026. The notification specifies May 8, 2026, as the date from which the revised amount takes effect.

This distinction matters because the announcement appeared in October, while the effective date stated in the notification is earlier.

Eligible families and claimants checking a case connected with this period should consult the official notification and ESIC for guidance on how the revised rate applies.

The increase has also drawn a welcome response from the All India NPS Employees Federation.

Its national president, Dr Manjeet Singh Patel, welcomed the decision and urged people to spread awareness so eligible families can learn about the assistance available to them.

Why the Increase Matters for Employees’ Families

Funeral expenses can create an immediate financial burden for a family following the death of an earning member.

Raising the assistance from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 provides eligible claimants with additional support during a difficult period.

For insured employees and their families, the change highlights the importance of understanding the social security benefits available through ESIC.

Knowing the applicable eligibility conditions and claim requirements can help families identify the assistance they may be entitled to receive.

The revised amount is ₹20,000, but the benefit remains subject to the governing provisions. Families seeking to claim it should confirm the latest requirements with ESIC and retain the documents needed to establish eligibility.
