Tamil Nadu Rural Jobs: Vijay Extends Work to 150 Days, offering eligible rural households an additional 25 days of paid employment after they complete the existing 125-day entitlement under the VB-G RAM G scheme.

The Tamil Nadu government has approved ₹100 crore from its state budget for the initiative, aimed at supporting vulnerable rural families.

The decision was formalised through an order issued by the state’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had directed officials to extend employment support during a review meeting on July 3, 2026.

The additional employment will not be available automatically to every household covered by the central scheme.

Instead, priority will be given to specified vulnerable groups that have already completed the full 125 days of guaranteed work.

Under the central government’s Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), known as VB-G RAM G, eligible rural households are entitled to 125 days of wage employment in a financial year.

Tamil Nadu’s new initiative adds another 25 days for eligible households, potentially increasing their total annual employment to 150 days.

The additional days will be funded entirely by the state government rather than through the central scheme’s regular cost-sharing arrangement.

The state has allocated ₹100 crore for the initiative during the 2026–27 financial year. The approval follows the government’s budget commitment to provide additional employment opportunities to vulnerable rural families.

The programme is intended to offer extra income opportunities to households that depend on wage employment for their livelihoods.

For families that have already used their full 125-day entitlement, the additional provision could help extend access to paid work during the same financial year.

[[H2: Which Rural Families Will Get 25 Extra Workdays?

The additional 25 days will be provided on a priority basis to eligible households belonging to specified vulnerable groups. Completing the full 125 days under the central scheme is a key condition for accessing the extension.

Women-headed households are among the priority beneficiaries. Single women and households that include persons with disabilities will also receive priority under the state-funded initiative.

Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) households are included as well. Beneficiaries covered under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, are also eligible for priority consideration.

These categories reflect the government’s focus on households that may face greater economic challenges and depend on rural employment programmes for income.

However, the extension is not a universal increase in guaranteed workdays for every rural household in Tamil Nadu.

Eligible families should follow the instructions issued by the relevant rural development authorities to understand how the additional employment will be provided and what documentation or verification may be required.

What Is the VB-G RAM G Employment Scheme?

The Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) is the central government’s rural employment programme that came into effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005.

The new framework provides a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment per year to eligible rural households whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.

Under the regular scheme, the Centre and state governments share funding according to the prescribed arrangement.

Tamil Nadu’s additional 25-day provision operates separately as a state-funded extension for specified groups.

This distinction is important because the extra employment is subject to eligibility conditions and the state government’s allocation.

The programme provides a mechanism for rural households to seek paid manual work through government-supported employment activities.

Such schemes are particularly important for families that rely on seasonal work and have limited alternative sources of income.

How the Additional Employment Could Help Rural Families

For eligible households, the extension could provide more opportunities to earn wages after completing the standard 125 days.

An additional 25 days of work may help families manage routine expenses and reduce the pressure caused by limited employment opportunities.

The initiative also places emphasis on women-headed households, single women, families with persons with disabilities, and SC and ST communities.

These groups have been specifically identified for priority under the additional employment provision.

The ₹100-crore allocation establishes the state’s financial commitment to the initiative for 2026–27.

Actual access to the additional work will depend on eligibility, implementation and the arrangements made by the responsible authorities.

Tamil Nadu’s decision therefore extends employment support beyond the standard entitlement for selected households rather than changing the national scheme for everyone.

Rural families should check the applicable conditions with local authorities to determine whether they qualify for the extra 25 days.
