There is some relief for employees and pensioners waiting for higher pensions under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
A large number of higher pension applications had been pending because of lengthy verification procedures and a sudden rise in claims.
To clear this backlog, the central government directed EPFO officials to speed up the process.
Following these instructions, EPFO has introduced four major measures to ensure higher pension claims are processed faster and within the prescribed timeline.
4 Steps EPFO Has Taken to Clear the Backlog
Online Portal for Higher Pension Applications
EPFO has introduced a dedicated online portal where eligible employees and pensioners can submit their joint option applications for higher pensions.
The digital process reduces dependence on paperwork and brings applications onto a central platform.
It also makes it easier to track the status of pension claims.
Faster and More Accurate Verification
EPFO has introduced standard procedures to verify past contribution records.
Under the process, salary and contribution details provided by employers are matched with EPFO’s records.
This helps check whether the employee’s previous salary and contribution details are correct before the higher pension is approved.
Clear Instructions to Regional Offices
EPFO’s zonal and regional offices have been given specific instructions to process higher pension applications within the prescribed timeframe.
Regional officials have also been given greater authority to address employer-related issues locally.
This is expected to reduce unnecessary delays in processing pension claims.
Regular Review Through Video Meetings
EPFO’s senior officials are regularly holding video conferences with zonal and regional officers.
During these meetings, the progress of pension claims is reviewed, delays are identified and instructions are given to offices that are falling behind.
This monitoring system is aimed at making regional offices more accountable and ensuring that pending applications do not remain stuck for long periods.
Why Were So Many Higher Pension Claims Pending?
The issue became significant after a Supreme Court ruling in November 2022, which allowed eligible employees to opt for a higher pension based on their actual salary instead of the earlier statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000.
Following the ruling, EPFO received a large number of applications from employees and pensioners seeking higher pensions.
However, checking old contribution records was not always easy.
Errors in historical records, delays in verification by employers and the complexity of checking past salary details caused many applications to remain pending.
What Happens Next?
The four measures are expected to reduce paperwork and technical errors while making regional offices more responsible for timely processing.
For pensioners and employees whose claims have been pending for months, the faster verification process could help move their applications forward.
Once eligible claims are approved, beneficiaries can receive their higher monthly pension along with applicable pension arrears, subject to the rules and verification requirements.
