WhatsApp is introducing one of its biggest privacy features yet — usernames. With this new feature, users will be able to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers.

Instead, they can simply share their WhatsApp username.

While this feature is being seen as a major step for user privacy, it has also raised concerns about online fraud and fake identities.

Many users are now wondering whether WhatsApp could face the same scam-related issues that have affected other messaging platforms.

How Will the WhatsApp Username Feature Work?

Until now, a phone number was required to contact someone on WhatsApp. With the introduction of usernames, users will be able to connect using a unique username, similar to how it works on Telegram.

If both the sender and receiver have enabled usernames, the chat will display the username instead of the phone number. This means users can communicate without revealing their personal mobile numbers.

However, WhatsApp has clarified that phone numbers are not being removed completely.

Your mobile number will still be required for account creation, login, verification, and security purposes. The username will simply act as an additional identity layer.

Why Are People Worried About This Feature?

The biggest concern is that usernames could make it easier for scammers to hide their real identities.

Experts warn that fraudsters may create fake usernames that resemble celebrities, companies, or trusted individuals to trick users. Similar issues have already been seen on other messaging platforms that support usernames.

The concern is not limited to users alone. Senior police officials and cybersecurity experts have also raised questions about how this feature could impact investigations into cybercrime, impersonation, and financial fraud.

According to IPS officer Arun Bothra, username-based identities could create new challenges for law enforcement agencies. He pointed out that similar features on other platforms have often been linked to investment scams, impersonation cases, and online fraud.

What Has WhatsApp Said About Security?

WhatsApp says that the new feature has been designed with multiple security protections.

The company has clarified that phone numbers will continue to be mandatory for account registration and verification. In addition, WhatsApp plans to use several security measures to prevent misuse.

These protections include restrictions on who can contact users through usernames, limits on how many new contacts an account can reach,

and systems that can detect suspicious activity patterns. If the platform identifies misuse, it can take action against the account.

Privacy Feature or New Fraud Risk?

The WhatsApp username feature could become a major privacy upgrade for billions of users by allowing them to chat without sharing their phone numbers.

However, experts believe that the success of this feature will depend heavily on how effectively WhatsApp prevents impersonation, scams, and misuse.

As the feature rolls out globally, users may get better privacy — but they will also need to be more careful about who they trust online.
