After a temporary suspension, Telegram is once again available for Android users in India through the Google Play Store.

The government had blocked access to the messaging platform from June 16 to June 22 as a precautionary measure ahead of the NEET UG 2026 re-examination.

The move was aimed at preventing cheating and the spread of misleading information related to the exam.

However, Telegram is still unavailable on Apple’s App Store.

Why Was Telegram Temporarily Blocked?

The temporary restriction was imposed following a request from the National Testing Agency (NTA).

According to the NTA, organized cheating networks were allegedly using Telegram to mislead candidates and facilitate unfair practices during the NEET UG 2026 re-examination, which was conducted on June 21.

To maintain the integrity of the exam, the government decided to temporarily block access to the platform across the country.

The decision was taken based on recommendations from both the NTA and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Message-Editing Feature Still Restricted

Although Telegram has returned to the Google Play Store, one restriction remains in place.

The government has extended the suspension of Telegram’s message-editing feature until June 30.

Authorities believe that disabling this feature can help prevent the manipulation of messages and the spread of misleading content during the sensitive examination period.

NEET Re-Exam Conducted Without Major Issues

The NEET UG 2026 re-examination was successfully held on June 21.

So far, there have been no reports of paper leaks or any major fraudulent activities linked to the exam.

Officials view this as a positive outcome of the preventive measures taken before the test.

Delhi High Court Supports Government’s Decision

Earlier this month, Telegram challenged the government’s decision in the Delhi High Court.

However, the court upheld the temporary restrictions, stating that the Centre had followed the proper legal process under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

The court observed that the government acted within its powers and that the emergency measures were proportionate to the situation.

It also noted that the required procedures had been followed before issuing the temporary blocking order.

What Happens Next?

While Telegram services have resumed for Android users, the restriction on message editing will continue until June 30.

Authorities are expected to review the situation after that date before deciding whether any further action is necessary.

For now, the government’s focus remains on ensuring fairness and transparency in major competitive examinations while preventing the misuse of digital platforms by organized cheating networks.
