The Central Government is planning a major change that could end toll-free travel for many government officials on national highways.
At present, several categories of government vehicles can pass through toll plazas without paying toll tax.
However, this privilege may soon be withdrawn as the government looks to reduce VIP benefits and promote equal treatment for all road users.
According to reports, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is considering a proposal to significantly reduce the list of vehicles exempt from toll payments.
Government Focuses on Ending VIP Culture
A high-level government committee has recommended changes to the existing toll tax rules.
The main objective is to reduce VIP culture and ensure that government officials follow the same toll payment system as ordinary citizens.
Officials believe that many people do not support the idea of government vehicles crossing toll plazas free of cost while regular commuters have to pay toll charges.
If approved, senior officials from both central and state governments may no longer receive toll exemptions.
How Government Employees May Pay Toll
Instead of receiving toll exemptions, government employees may be encouraged to use a FASTag Annual Pass.
The Ministry has reportedly written to various government departments and state governments, asking them to consider this option for their employees.
Just as government staff receive reimbursement for official mobile phone expenses, departments may also reimburse the cost of the FASTag Annual Pass.
The government is also holding discussions with defence authorities regarding the proposed changes.
What Is FASTag Annual Pass?
The FASTag Annual Pass is a prepaid toll payment facility that allows vehicles to cross toll plazas up to 200 times in a year.
The pass is valid for one year and currently costs ₹3,075.
If the limit is exhausted, it can be renewed again as required.
The government believes this system could provide a simpler and more transparent alternative to toll exemptions.
Which Vehicles Currently Get Toll Exemption?
Under the existing rules, several categories of vehicles are allowed to cross toll plazas without paying toll tax.
These include:
Vehicles carrying people holding 25 top constitutional positions
Army and paramilitary vehicles on official duty
Emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigades, and magistrate vehicles
Vehicles used by officials inspecting highway projects
All such vehicles are required to use a special Exempted FASTag.
However, government officials may soon be removed from this exemption list if the proposed changes are approved.
What This Could Mean for Highway Users
If the proposal is implemented, it would mark a significant shift in the government’s approach to toll exemptions.
The move is aimed at increasing transparency, reducing special privileges, and creating a more uniform toll collection system across the country.
While emergency services and defence-related vehicles are expected to continue receiving exemptions, many government officials may soon have to pay toll tax just like any other highway user.
