If you are using an old Android smartphone, this is important news for you. WhatsApp has released a major update that will stop the app from working on many older Android devices.

The company has increased its minimum system requirements, which means phones running outdated software will no longer support the app.

This is not a sudden decision. Every year, WhatsApp updates its list of devices that can no longer receive new features and security updates.

If your phone is around 8–10 years old or runs on Android 5.0 or below, the app may stop working on your device soon.

Which Phones Will Be Affected?

WhatsApp will no longer support smartphones running Android 5.0 or older. Many older models from brands like Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and LG will be affected.

Some of the devices include:

Samsung Galaxy S3, S4

Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), Moto G (2nd Gen)

Moto E (1st Gen), Moto E (2nd Gen)

Moto X (1st Gen), Moto X (2nd Gen)

Sony Xperia Z Series

LG Nexus 4, Optimus G

HTC One X

OnePlus One, OnePlus 2

OPPO Find 7, Find 7a, Mirror 5, Neo 5, Joy 3

Vivo X5 Pro, Y15, Y22, Y27

Why Has WhatsApp Taken This Decision?

The main reason behind this decision is user security. Older smartphones usually stop receiving security updates, which increases the risk of hacking, data theft, and cyber attacks.

Today, WhatsApp is not just used for chatting. It also stores important data like bank OTPs, personal photos, documents, and other sensitive information.

If a device is not secure, all this data can be at risk. That’s why WhatsApp now supports only those devices that meet modern security standards.

How to Check If Your Phone Is Supported

You can easily check whether your phone supports WhatsApp by following these steps:

Step 1: Go to Settings
Step 2: Tap on “About Phone”
Step 3: Check your Android Version
Step 4: If your Android version is below 5.0, WhatsApp may stop working soon
Step 5: You can also check the Play Store. If the app is no longer updating, it means your device may no longer be supported
