ChatGPT users in India may soon start seeing advertisements inside their conversations.

OpenAI is expanding its ChatGPT advertising programme to more markets as it looks to build a new revenue stream.

The ads are designed to appear separately from ChatGPT’s answers and will be clearly marked as sponsored content.

Who Will See Ads on ChatGPT?

The advertising programme is aimed at logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans.

Users on Plus, Pro and Business plans will not see ads, according to OpenAI. Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 will also not receive advertisements.

The ads will appear below ChatGPT’s responses, rather than being mixed into the answer itself.

OpenAI says the separation is intended to make it clear which content comes from ChatGPT and which content is paid for by an advertiser.

Your Chats Will Not Be Shared With Advertisers

Privacy is one of the biggest concerns around advertising on an AI chatbot.

OpenAI says advertisers do not have access to users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers instead receive aggregate information about ad performance, such as views and clicks.

OpenAI also says advertisements do not influence the answers provided by ChatGPT.

Ads may be selected based on the context and intent of a conversation, while remaining visually separate from the actual response.

ChatGPT Ads Business Is Expanding

OpenAI first began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026 and has since expanded the pilot to additional countries. The company says it is continuing to expand the programme to more markets.

For businesses, OpenAI has also introduced a self-serve Ads Manager that allows advertisers to create campaigns, set budgets, upload advertisements and track performance.

The current Ads Manager information lists a minimum daily campaign budget of ₹725 for India.

What Will ChatGPT Ads Look Like?

The advertisements are expected to appear below ChatGPT answers and include details such as the advertiser’s name, headline, description and landing page.

OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s responses.

The company’s stated aim is to use advertising to support broader access to ChatGPT while maintaining user privacy and keeping ads separate from the answers users receive.
