A smartphone is no longer judged only by its camera, processor, or battery. The software experience has become just as important.
Keeping this in mind, UK-based tech brand Nothing has introduced Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17.
The company says the update brings more than 80 new features and improvements, including a refreshed design, better customization, AI-powered tools, and smoother performance.
The Open Beta rollout starts with the Nothing Phone (3) from August 26, while more devices will receive the update in the coming months.
Fresh Design and New Widgets
Nothing OS 5.0 comes with a redesigned home screen featuring transparent widgets and a new search bar for a cleaner look. The Gallery app has also been updated with a fresh design.
A new Adaptive Color System automatically matches app icons, widgets, and Quick Settings with your wallpaper.
The status bar, Settings menu, Camera, Gallery icons, animations, and spacing have also been improved. The entire system now uses the Geist font.
The update also adds two new widgets called Collector and Away Time. Collector lets users organize photos into visual collections, while Away Time tracks screen-free time and digital wellbeing.
Users also get two new lock screen clock styles called Gooey and Micrographics.
Nothing has also made home screen editing easier by allowing users to move multiple apps and widgets at once.
The Glyph interface now has its own dedicated app, and a new Glyph Timer widget lets users start a timer directly from the home screen.
AI Features and Better Performance
Nothing says the new update improves touch response, keeps background apps running more efficiently, and manages system resources better for smoother performance.
The Essential Voice feature now offers faster voice transcription with improved formatting. Smart Collections automatically organizes content, while the new Essential Apps Builder allows users to create simple AI-powered apps without writing any code.
Which Phones Will Get the Update?
The Nothing Phone (3) is the first device to receive the Open Beta, with the stable version expected in mid-October.
The update will then roll out in phases to the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (3a), Phone (2a), and Phone (2a) Plus.
The Nothing Phone (3a) Lite and CMF Phone 2 Pro are expected to receive the stable update in December 2026 and January 2027, respectively.
