WhatsApp may soon become more secure in India.

The messaging platform has started testing a new “SIM binding” feature in its latest beta update.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature appeared in the Android beta version 2.26.8.6.

This update comes after the Indian government announced new SIM-binding rules for major OTT and communication apps.

What Is SIM Binding and Why Does It Matter?

SIM binding is a system that links an app directly to the SIM card used to register the mobile number.

In simple words, the app will only work if the original SIM card is active inside the phone.

If the SIM is removed, replaced, or deactivated, WhatsApp may stop working on that device.

This system is already used by many UPI payment apps to improve security and reduce fraud.

What Changes for WhatsApp Users?

Right now, WhatsApp works using a 6-digit verification code.

Once you enter the code and log in, the app does not keep checking whether the SIM card remains active.

With SIM binding, that will change.

The app will continuously verify whether the registered SIM is active in the device.

If not, access could be restricted.

Screenshots shared by WABetaInfo suggest that WhatsApp is building technical changes to comply with India’s new rules.

Why Is the Government Introducing This Rule?

The move follows directions from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Indian government.

The main goal is to prevent misuse of disconnected or resold phone numbers. Cybercriminals often use inactive numbers for fraud and scams.

By linking apps directly to active SIM cards, authorities hope to reduce cyber fraud and improve digital safety.

If implemented fully, SIM binding could mark a major shift in how messaging apps function in India — with stronger security but stricter control.
