Big changes are coming for BSNL users.

The government-owned telecom company has decided to shut down its 3G mobile network to focus on expanding 4G services and preparing for 5G.

As part of this move, BSNL also plans to end contracts with Nokia and ZTE, the companies currently maintaining its network.

If you are using a BSNL 3G SIM, it’s time to take action.

How This Affects BSNL Customers

Millions of BSNL customers are still using 3G SIM cards, especially in areas where the 4G network hasn’t reached yet.

Currently, BSNL 3G services are available in around 5,863 towns and cities across the country.

Users in these areas may face connectivity issues once 3G is discontinued.

If your mobile does not support 4G, you may need to upgrade your device to continue using BSNL’s services without disruption.

Steps 3G Customers Should Take

BSNL has instructed its circle chief general managers to shut down 3G services wherever 4G coverage is sufficient.

Customers with 3G SIMs are advised to:

Visit the nearest BSNL service center or office.

Upgrade to a 4G or 5G SIM to ensure uninterrupted service.

BSNL is coordinating with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which is installing 4G towers across the country, to facilitate the transition.

BSNL’s 4G Network and Towers

BSNL has already installed 97,481 4G towers out of a total of 229,278 tower sites nationwide.

Around 58,919 towers still support 3G services.

As of September, BSNL had 92.2 million mobile subscribers, with 22 million on 4G and the rest using 2G and 3G SIMs.

Most of the remaining users are on 2G.

Why 3G Is Being Phased Out

The main technical reason for this move is spectrum optimization.

BSNL wants to fully utilize its 2100 MHz spectrum for 4G, which will improve service quality and prepare the network for 5G.

However, this also means that customers with older phones that don’t support 4G will need to upgrade their devices, which could be an additional expense.

BSNL’s shift from 3G to 4G is a big step toward modernizing India’s telecom network, but it’s crucial for users to upgrade their SIMs and devices to stay connected.
