Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the price of electric vehicles (EVs) will match that of petrol vehicles within the next 4 to 6 months.
He made this statement while addressing the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2025 on October 6.
Gadkari said that switching to clean energy is not only vital for the environment but also for the economy, as India spends around ₹22 lakh crore every year on fuel imports.
He added that reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and promoting EVs are key to achieving sustainable growth.
EV Revolution Ahead
“Within the next 4–6 months, the cost of electric vehicles will be the same as petrol vehicles,” Gadkari stated, calling it a turning point for both the auto industry and consumers.
Achieving price parity has been one of the biggest hurdles for EV adoption in India. Once the prices become equal, it is expected to boost demand, attract investment in infrastructure, and cut carbon emissions.
He also shared his goal of making India the world’s largest automobile industry in the next five years.
When he took charge, the sector was worth ₹14 lakh crore; now it has grown to ₹22 lakh crore, ranking India third after the U.S. (₹78 lakh crore) and China (₹47 lakh crore).
Green Growth and Rural Income
Talking about India’s biofuel success, Gadkari said that farmers have earned ₹45,000 crore by producing ethanol from corn.
He also revealed plans to use all segregated solid waste for road construction by 2027, turning waste into a valuable resource.
Education and Innovation for a Green Future
Gadkari highlighted the importance of higher education and skill development in shaping India’s progress.
With a large number of young and talented people, the country must train students with industry-relevant and practical skills.
He urged institutions to adopt innovative technologies in their courses to prepare students for future opportunities in clean mobility and green technologies.
