Thousands of poor families in Chhattisgarh are getting relief from heavy electricity bills by joining the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Under this scheme, solar panels are installed on rooftops, which helps households save ₹2,000–₹3,000 every month on electricity costs.
A villager, Ramakant, shared that this scheme allows him to use his savings for his family’s other basic needs.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing affordable access to electricity to the poor.
Objective and benefits of the scheme
The main aim of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is to promote rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW in homes across India and provide 300 units of free electricity per month through a 60% subsidy.
About 1 crore (10 million) families are expected to benefit, saving nearly ₹15,000 crore every year. Apart from cutting electricity bills, the scheme will also help reduce power shortages and promote the use of clean and green energy.
Through a digital application system available at the state and panchayat level, solar installation becomes easier for all. It is also generating jobs in areas such as solar panel manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
Subsidy and application process
The government provides a ₹30,000 subsidy per kilowatt, up to a maximum of ₹78,000 for 3 kW rooftop systems.
To apply, beneficiaries must register on the official website pmsuryaghar.gov.in, providing details such as their state, power distribution company (discom), consumer number, mobile number, and email.
Once the application is submitted and feasibility is approved by the discom, installation is carried out by an authorized vendor.
After installation, a net meter is set up, and once verified, the subsidy is credited directly to the applicant’s bank account.
The process is completely online and transparent, ensuring hassle-free access for beneficiaries.
Environment and sustainable future
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is more than just a way to save on electricity bills. It is a major step toward environmental protection and energy independence.
By promoting solar power, the scheme is pushing India toward green energy while strengthening the economy.
It encourages self-reliance in energy, reduces pollution, and ensures cleaner power for the future.
For rural and urban poor families, this scheme is proving to be a real boon — turning electricity from a costly burden into a free and reliable service.
