Railways New Rule: Changes in Ticket Booking from May 1 – What Will Be Affected

For instance, paying extra for ATM transactions or being unable to travel on a waiting train ticket could put a sudden strain on your budget.

Similarly, any hike in LPG prices could disturb your monthly finances.

To avoid unexpected financial stress, it’s best to be aware of these new rules and plan accordingly. Here’s a look at what’s changing and how you can prepare:

1. ATM Transactions Becoming Costlier

Starting May 1, the Reserve Bank of India has increased charges on ATM services:

Cash withdrawal beyond the free limit will now cost ₹19 per transaction (up from ₹17).

Balance enquiry will be charged at ₹7 (earlier ₹6).

Other services like deposits and mini statements may also incur higher charges.

Tip: Try to stay within your free ATM limits and use net banking when possible to avoid these extra charges.

2. Major Changes in Railway Ticket Booking

From May 1, new railway rules will apply:

Travel on waiting tickets will no longer be allowed in Sleeper or AC classes.

Only general class passengers can travel with waiting tickets.

The advance booking window has been reduced from 120 days to 60 days.

Charges for booking, cancellation, and Tatkal quotas may also go up.

Tip: Book your train tickets well in advance and be prepared for possible changes in fare or cancellation rules.

3. Banking Services – RRB Merger

The government is implementing the ‘One State, One RRB’ scheme in 11 states, which will merge Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to improve services.

States affected include Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, West Bengal, J&K, Karnataka, Odisha, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.

Benefit: Expect better digital banking, more branches, and improved service delivery.

4. Possible Change in LPG Cylinder Prices

As usual, LPG cylinder prices will be reviewed on May 1. There is a chance that prices could increase again, just like in April when rates went up by ₹50.

Tip: If possible, book your LPG cylinder before April 30 to avoid paying more after the price hike.

5. Changes in FD and Savings Account Interest Rates

There may also be changes to fixed deposit (FD) and savings account interest rates.

While no official announcement has been made, banks might adjust rates based on RRB restructuring or RBI guidelines.

Tip: If you’re planning to invest, keep an eye on interest rate announcements and lock in higher rates early if available.
