If you want to add your partner’s name to your passport after marriage, there’s good news! The Ministry of External Affairs has made the process much easier, offering relief to millions of people.
No More Marriage Certificate Requirement
Previously, you had to submit a marriage certificate to add your spouse’s name to your passport.
This was a challenge, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, where getting a marriage certificate after marriage isn’t common.
However, the Ministry of External Affairs has removed this requirement.
Instead, you can now simply fill out a form and submit a self-declaration to have your spouse’s name added. This form only requires some basic information and a photo.
Introducing Annexure J
The new system includes a form called Annexure J. This document will have a joint photograph of both you
and your spouse, along with some essential details and signatures. Annexure J will serve as proof of marriage for the passport authorities.
Key Benefits of the New Rule
No need for a government-issued marriage certificate to prove your marriage.
The process is now simpler, transparent, and faster.
Adding your spouse’s name to your passport is possible without a marriage certificate.
This change provides great relief to people from rural areas and small towns.
Why This Change Was Needed
In many parts of India, people still do not get a marriage certificate, making it difficult to add their spouse’s name in official documents, especially for international travel.
Understanding this, the government made the process more flexible.
This change aims to reduce unnecessary legal hurdles, particularly for those who need to update their passport for travel, visa applications, or family identification.
