Ayushman Bharat: Can Senior Citizens Over 70 Skip Private Health Insurance?

Good news for senior citizens! The government’s Ayushman Bharat health scheme will now cover individuals aged 70 years and above.

This will especially benefit elderly people who are unable to afford their own health insurance policies.

Many on social media are celebrating this decision, with some users suggesting that senior citizens no longer need separate health insurance. But is this really true?

Benefits for Elderly Who Can’t Afford Premiums

Ashish Sethi, Head (Health SBU and Travel) at Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, explained, “This decision ensures that the elderly will now receive proper medical care without income being a barrier.”

This is especially helpful for those who cannot afford health insurance premiums and for elderly people suffering from pre-existing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, or heart disease.

Limited Access and Uncertainty Remain

However, this government scheme may not suit all senior citizens over 70. An industry expert clarified that Ayushman Bharat is ideal for those who require basic medical care at panel hospitals with fixed costs.

But elderly individuals may face challenges, like waiting in long lines for treatment, which could be difficult for many.

Additionally, the government has yet to release specific terms and conditions for seniors under the scheme.

It’s unclear whether the benefits for elderly citizens will be the same as for those below the poverty line. Special requests, such as private rooms, may not be guaranteed.

Out-of-Pocket Expenses and Panel Limitations

An industry official also pointed out that some elderly may prefer to continue treatment with doctors they know, who might not be affiliated with Ayushman Bharat panel hospitals.

In such cases, they would need to bear the cost themselves. Moreover, the scheme’s limited hospital network might cause inconvenience, particularly if the nearest panel hospital is far from their home.

Ayushman Bharat as a Backup, Not a Replacement

Experts suggest that senior citizens should consider Ayushman Bharat as a backup rather than a full substitute for private health insurance.

According to Sethi, a standalone health policy offers a wider network of hospitals and higher coverage, which is crucial for addressing the complex medical needs that come with aging.

A coverage of ₹5 lakh may not be enough for severe illnesses, highlighting the need for additional health insurance.

This scheme provides significant support, but it’s not a complete solution for all seniors’ healthcare needs.
