According to the power department, this surcharge is being introduced to recover the higher cost of electricity generation

and power purchases. The additional charge will be shown separately in electricity bills issued from June onwards.

All Consumer Categories Will Be Affected

The increase will impact consumers across all categories, including domestic and commercial users. As a result, millions of electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh are expected to feel the financial impact.

Consumer organizations have raised concerns about the move, saying that people are already dealing with rising inflation and higher living costs.

Many have also pointed out that complaints about power cuts continue in several areas, making the bill hike even more difficult for consumers to accept.

According to news agency ANI, the surcharge is being imposed following guidelines from the Government of India and information provided by the regulatory commission.

A statement issued by UPPCL said that the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) calculated for March 2026 will be collected from consumers in June 2026.

How Much More Will Consumers Have to Pay?

UPPCL stated that the FPPAS for March 2026 has been fixed at 10%, and the same will be charged in June 2026 across all consumer categories.

For example, if your electricity bill was ₹1,000 until last month, you may now have to pay around ₹1,100 after the surcharge is added.

The power corporation has clarified that this extra amount will be collected in the upcoming billing cycle

and will appear separately in electricity bills. Consumers will have to pay this charge in addition to their regular electricity tariff.

Why Is the Fuel Surcharge Being Added?

Officials said the surcharge is necessary to compensate power companies for the increased cost of fuel and electricity purchases.

Under the fuel adjustment charge mechanism, power distribution companies are allowed to recover fluctuations in fuel

and power procurement costs from consumers. The current surcharge has been imposed under these existing provisions.

Opposition and Consumer Groups Criticize the Decision

The decision has sparked criticism from opposition parties and consumer groups, especially at a time when many areas of Uttar Pradesh are facing complaints of power cuts and supply issues.

Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad criticized the move and also raised concerns about smart meters. He claimed that smart meters have increased electricity bills significantly and demanded their removal.

Consumer groups have also questioned the timing of the surcharge. They argue that households are already struggling with inflation, while complaints regarding irregular power supply continue in several districts.

Despite the criticism, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has defended the decision, saying that the surcharge is being imposed according to existing regulations and approved provisions.
