Indian stock markets remained closed on Friday due to the Muharram holiday.
Both major exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), suspended trading across all segments, including equity, derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing.
Commodity markets also saw partial closures, affecting trading activity for the day.
Stock and Commodity Markets Closed for Muharram
While NSE and BSE were shut for the entire day, the impact was also seen in commodity trading.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) remained closed during its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm, but it will reopen for the evening session starting at 5 pm.
The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), which deals mainly in agricultural commodities, stayed closed for the full day.
Because the holiday fell on a Friday, traders will get a three-day break, with markets reopening on Monday, June 29.
Upcoming Market Holidays in 2026
After this break, the stock market will remain open for nearly three months before the next holiday on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Other scheduled market holidays include:
October 2: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
October 20: Dussehra
November 10: Diwali–Balipratipada
November 24: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev
December 25: Christmas
These dates will see full market closures across exchanges.
Market Snapshot Before the Holiday
In the previous trading session, markets ended slightly higher despite early gains being reduced due to profit booking in IT and metal stocks.
The Sensex closed 100 points higher at 77,100, while the Nifty rose 34 points to end at 24,056.
However, broader markets underperformed, with both midcap and smallcap indices slipping around 0.5 percent.
Key stocks such as Hindalco, Power Grid, Infosys, Tata Steel, and Bajaj Finance were among the major losers during the session.
Overall, the holiday brings a short pause to market activity before trading resumes on June 29.
