The central government has introduced a new rule to make life easier for domestic LPG users who switch to piped natural gas (PNG).
On Monday, the Centre notified the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026.
The main aim of this update is to give more flexibility and convenience to consumers shifting between LPG and PNG connections.
What Has Changed for LPG Users?
Under the new amendment, LPG consumers who also have a PNG connection can now apply to close their LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG gas installed.
This means users will not have to keep both connections active unnecessarily.
However, there is also a useful benefit built into the rule.
Consumers can get a transfer voucher, which allows them to restore their LPG connection later if they move to a place where PNG supply is not available.
This change is especially helpful for:
Transferable employees
Migrant families
Tenants
Students
People shifting to non-PNG areas
The government says this step adds flexibility for people who frequently relocate.
Strong Growth in PNG and LPG Distribution
Along with the policy update, the government shared key updates on gas infrastructure growth.
Since March this year:
Around 7.99 lakh PNG connections have already been activated
Infrastructure has been created for another 2.87 lakh connections
Total potential connections now stand at 10.86 lakh
On the LPG side, distribution has also remained strong. In the last four days alone:
Around 1.72 crore LPG cylinders were delivered
Against 1.66 crore bookings
This shows steady demand and strong supply management across the country.
Awareness Drives and Small Cylinder Sales Increase
Public sector oil companies have also been running awareness campaigns to encourage the use of smaller 5 kg LPG cylinders.
So far, around 15,400 awareness camps have been organised since April 3, and more than 2.45 lakh small cylinders have been sold during these campaigns.
Officials say these efforts are aimed at improving accessibility and helping households choose the right cylinder size based on their needs.
Government Advises Against Panic Buying
The government has also urged citizens not to panic buy petrol, diesel, or LPG.
Officials assured that there is enough supply and all efforts are being made to ensure smooth availability of fuel and cooking gas.
People have also been advised to:
Avoid spreading or believing rumours
Rely only on official information sources
Use digital platforms for LPG booking
Avoid unnecessary visits to distributors
Citizens are also encouraged to adopt energy-saving habits and consider cleaner alternatives like PNG, electric stoves, or induction cooktops wherever possible.
The government says these steps are important to ensure smooth energy management and avoid unnecessary pressure on supply systems.
