ChatGPT for Teens has been launched for users aged 13 to 17, introducing stronger safety protections, learning-focused features and parental controls.

OpenAI said the new experience is designed to help teenagers use AI in a more age-appropriate way.

The teen experience can be automatically applied when OpenAI estimates that an account belongs to someone under 18.

The system uses age-related signals, while users who are 18 or older can verify their age if they are incorrectly placed in the teen experience.

ChatGPT for Teens Gets Stronger Safety Guardrails

The new experience adds stricter protections around sensitive content. These include safeguards for topics such as graphic violence, self-harm, sexual or romantic content, violent roleplay and extreme beauty ideals.

OpenAI has also designed the experience to discourage unhealthy dependence on AI. The company says the teen version is intended to support real-world relationships and help young users engage with AI in a healthy way.

The safeguards are not presented as foolproof. OpenAI has acknowledged that safety measures can be bypassed and said it will continue improving the protections.

Parents Can Set Controls and Quiet Hours

Parents and guardians can link their accounts with a teen’s ChatGPT account and manage selected settings. These include sensitive-content controls, voice mode, image generation, study mode and quiet hours.

Quiet hours allow parents to set a period when ChatGPT cannot be used from the linked teen account.

Parents can also receive safety notifications in limited situations involving serious self-harm concerns or conversations related to violence.

However, parental controls do not give parents access to their teenager’s conversations or provide real-time monitoring.

When a safety notification is sent, OpenAI says only information needed to support the teen’s safety is shared.

Focus Shifts Towards Learning Instead of Shortcuts

ChatGPT for Teens also puts greater emphasis on education and active learning.

Features such as Study Mode are designed to guide students through problems and encourage them to understand the subject instead of simply receiving an answer.

The approach is aimed at helping teenagers use AI for studying, creativity and skill development while reducing the risk of using the chatbot simply to complete schoolwork.

OpenAI’s move comes as concerns continue to grow around the impact of AI chatbots on younger users, including questions about harmful content, emotional dependence and academic misuse.

What Happens When a Teen Turns 18?

When ChatGPT identifies an account holder as 18 or older, the account can move out of the teen experience. Teen protections are then removed by default and the user gets control over adult account settings.

If the account was linked to a parent or guardian, the parental-control connection also ends when the account transitions to the adult experience. The user can later choose to set up parental controls again.

The ChatGPT for Teens launch marks a significant step in OpenAI’s effort to create a more age-appropriate AI experience for younger users.

For families, the combination of stronger safeguards, learning tools and parental controls provides additional ways to manage how teenagers interact with the chatbot.
