Apple Pay metro travel abroad is now an option for Indian users after Apple launched its payment service in India.

Eligible Indian cardholders can use Apple Pay for public transport in supported cities overseas, where transit systems accept contactless payments or compatible travel cards.

Apple Pay launched in India on September 30, 2026, initially supporting eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank.

The service works on compatible iPhones, iPads and Apple Watch devices.

Apple Pay Metro Travel Abroad Explained

Public transport systems in different countries use different payment methods.

In some cities, passengers can simply tap an Apple Pay-enabled iPhone or Apple Watch at a contactless reader, while other transport networks allow their own travel cards to be added to Apple Wallet.

Indian travellers can check available transport cards by opening the Wallet app, tapping the Add button and selecting the transit-card option.

If a particular local card is not listed, Apple recommends checking with the relevant transport agency.

Several international destinations already support Apple Pay or compatible transit cards.

Japan, for example, supports travel cards including Suica, PASMO and ICOCA, while Hong Kong supports Octopus through Apple Wallet.

Some transport systems in Singapore and the US also support contactless payments.

How Indians Can Use Apple Pay on Metro Systems

If a metro or public transport network accepts contactless Apple Pay payments, users can hold the top of their iPhone or the display of their Apple Watch near the reader.

For supported cards and systems, Express Mode can make the process faster because the device may not need to be unlocked before tapping.

For compatible transit cards, users can also add the card to Apple Wallet and use it according to the transport operator’s rules.

The exact process differs between cities and transport networks.

Apple Pay does not automatically provide metro access in every country.

Travellers need to check whether their destination accepts Apple Pay, contactless payment cards or a particular transit card before relying on the service.

Which Indian Cards Work With Apple Pay

At launch in India, Apple Pay supports eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

Apple says these cards can be used at supported merchants in India and anywhere that accepts NFC transactions, subject to the applicable card and merchant conditions.

For overseas travel, users should also check whether international transactions are enabled on their card and review applicable foreign-exchange or other card charges.

Overseas use is processed through the card network rather than UPI.

 Check These Things Before Travelling

Before using Apple Pay for metro travel abroad, passengers should confirm that the destination’s transport system supports contactless payments or a compatible Apple Wallet travel card.

They should also verify that their particular Indian card is eligible and enabled for international transactions.

Carrying a physical payment card as a backup can also be useful because Apple Pay access depends on card eligibility, transport-system compatibility and the functioning of the payment terminal.
