Artificial Intelligence is no longer limited to answering questions or generating content. The next big step is AI agents — smart systems that can perform tasks on your behalf with minimal human involvement.

From booking tickets and planning trips to ordering groceries and shopping online, AI agents can handle multiple tasks after receiving a simple command. Now, they are getting another major capability: making UPI payments.

What Are AI Agents?

AI agents are software systems designed to complete tasks based on user instructions. Unlike traditional chatbots, they can reason, plan, remember information, and make decisions to achieve a specific goal.

For example, an AI agent can compare flight prices, book tickets, order groceries, or schedule appointments without requiring step-by-step instructions.

AI agents are not limited to software. Real-world examples include robots, automated drones, and self-driving vehicles that can perform tasks independently.

Pine Labs Introduces a Payment Solution

One of the biggest challenges for AI agents has been making online payments. Until now, human approval was usually required before a payment could be completed.

Pine Labs claims it has solved this problem with a new system called the Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P).

The company says the system allows AI agents to complete payments using India’s existing UPI infrastructure. It relies on two key technologies: UPI One-Time Mandates (OTM) and Reserve Pay.

OTM lets users approve a future payment in advance by setting aside a specific amount for a transaction.

Pay, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, is mainly used for recurring and automatic payments such as subscriptions.

Can AI Agents Spend All Your Money?

Allowing AI systems to make payments naturally raises concerns about safety and misuse.

According to Pine Labs, safeguards have been built into the system through a layer called Grantex. This creates a digital identity for the AI agent and defines what it is allowed to do.

Users can set spending limits and permissions, ensuring that the AI agent can only spend money within approved boundaries.

The system also keeps a record of every transaction, making it easier to track spending and maintain control.

As AI agents become more capable, features like autonomous UPI payments could make them useful for everything from shopping

and bill payments to travel bookings and subscription management. However, security and user control will remain key factors in their wider adoption.
