Tata Motors Unveils New Petrol Engine for Harrier and Safari SUVs

Tata Motors is in the final stages of developing a cutting-edge petrol powertrain for its esteemed Harrier and Safari SUVs. A senior executive at the company disclosed this exciting development.

Currently, these models are equipped with a robust two-liter diesel engine, but the future holds something different – a potent 1.5L Turbo GDI petrol engine.

Prioritizing Diesel Power

In a conversation with ‘PTI-Bhasha,’ Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, emphasized the company’s focus on diesel powertrains.

He noted that an overwhelming 80% of the market, comprising roughly two lakh units annually, is rooted in diesel-driven vehicles. Given this market reality, Tata Motors intends to expand its diesel powertrain lineup.

A Look at the 1.5-Liter Engine

The forthcoming 1.5-liter GDI engine (Gasoline Direct Injection) is currently in development and is set to debut in two of Tata Motors’ SUV models, Harrier and Safari.

Chandra explained that the initial emphasis on diesel was driven by the customer preference for diesel engines due to their superior torque performance.

However, Tata Motors is now diversifying its powertrain offerings to meet evolving market demands.

Anticipating the Arrival

The recently launched Harrier and Safari facelift models presently feature a 2.0-liter diesel engine.

The introduction of the new petrol powertrain necessitates a systematic development process and integration with the vehicles.

Chandra added that Tata Motors is also working on enhancing production capacity. While the petrol engine’s launch is on the horizon, it’s not far off.

High Ratings for Harrier and Safri

Last week, Tata Motors unveiled the latest versions of the Harrier and Safari with introductory prices of Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 16.19 lakh, respectively.

These upgraded SUVs have earned top safety ratings from Global NCAP, further establishing Tata Motors as a leader in safety standards.

Embracing Market Trends

With the increasing popularity of petrol variants in midsize SUVs like Hyundai Creta,

Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and others, Tata Motors is gearing up to introduce petrol versions of its Harrier and Safari to align with evolving market preferences and customer demands.
