VFS Global Guwahati Visa Centre has opened in Assam, giving travellers across Northeast India a new place to submit visa applications for 14 countries.
The facility is expected to make overseas travel arrangements more convenient for people seeking opportunities in education, tourism, business and other fields.
Located at the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Khanapara, Guwahati, the centre is designed to serve applicants from all eight northeastern states.
Previously, some applicants had to travel outside the region, including to cities such as Delhi or Kolkata, to access visa application services.
The opening marks VFS Global’s first Visa Application Centre in Assam and expands access to visa services within the Northeast.
However, the centre will facilitate the application process; the final decision to approve or reject a visa remains with the relevant country’s authorities.
VFS Global Guwahati Visa Centre Covers 14 Countries
The new facility will process visa applications for Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Applications for Malta are limited to the D-Visa category, which covers long-stay visas.
The centre’s coverage includes destinations popular with people travelling for tourism, higher education, employment-related purposes and business.
It also provides access to Schengen visa application services, allowing eligible travellers to apply for permission to visit participating European countries under the applicable rules.
For applicants, having a facility in Guwahati could reduce the need to arrange separate journeys to other cities simply to submit visa applications.
The convenience will depend on the destination country, the type of visa required and the procedures applicable to each application.
Applicants should confirm the latest document requirements, appointment availability and submission procedures for their destination before visiting the centre.
All Eight Northeastern States to Benefit
The centre is intended to serve residents of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
Its location in Guwahati makes it an important access point for people across the region who need visa application services.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility alongside Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Charan Boro and Yummi Talwar, VFS Global’s Chief Operating Officer for South Asia.
Representatives from the diplomatic missions of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France also attended the inauguration.
The centre is expected to help applicants seeking international travel for education, tourism and business by improving access to application services closer to home.
It may also make the process more manageable for people who would otherwise need to factor intercity travel into their plans.
The actual time and cost savings will vary depending on where applicants live, their destination and whether additional appointments or procedures are required elsewhere.
What Applicants Should Know Before Applying
VFS Global facilitates visa applications on behalf of participating governments, but it does not independently decide whether a visa should be granted. Decisions remain with the relevant embassy, consulate or government authority.
Applicants should therefore ensure that they select the correct visa category and follow the destination country’s instructions.
Depending on the application, they may need to provide supporting documents, attend an appointment or complete other required formalities.
The opening of the Guwahati facility improves local access to the application process, but it does not guarantee approval or change the eligibility requirements imposed by individual countries.
For residents of the Northeast planning to travel abroad, the new centre offers an additional option for submitting applications without automatically having to travel to another major Indian city.
Checking the official application procedures before booking an appointment can help applicants prepare the required documents and avoid unnecessary delays.
