USCIS Online Filing Expands for H-1B, F-1 Applicants as the US immigration agency broadens electronic submission options for several immigration forms, making it easier for eligible applicants to submit documents without relying on paper filings.

The expansion covers several forms used by H-1B workers, F-1 students, Green Card holders and other immigration applicants.

However, online filing is available only for eligible forms and specific filing categories.

Eligible H-1B petitions, including certain Form I-129 filings, can be submitted online through a USCIS account.

F-1 students may also use online filing for Form I-539 in eligible cases involving an extension or change of nonimmigrant status.

Green Card holders can file Form I-90 online when applying to replace or renew their Green Card.

Other forms available for online filing include Form N-400 for citizenship, Form I-130 for family-based petitions and Form I-765 for employment authorisation.

Two Ways to Submit USCIS Forms Online

USCIS offers two online filing methods. Applicants can either complete an eligible form electronically through a guided process or upload a completed PDF of the form along with the required supporting evidence.

Both options allow applicants to use their USCIS online account to manage their cases.

The online system can also make it easier to keep track of pending immigration requests and related communications.

The broader move toward electronic filing follows a 2026 USCIS rule that allows the agency to require online filing for certain benefit requests that have been available electronically for at least 180 days.

USCIS must provide advance notice before making e-filing mandatory for an eligible form.

Not Every Immigration Form Can Be Filed Online

The availability of online filing does not mean every immigration form or category can be submitted electronically.

Applicants must check whether their particular form and filing category are eligible before starting the process.

There are also specific rules for certain concurrent filings, joint applications and submissions involving legal representatives.

Choosing an incorrect filing category online can lead to rejection or denial, and filing fees may not be refunded in some situations.

What H-1B and F-1 Applicants Should Check

H-1B workers and F-1 students should first confirm that their specific application qualifies for online filing.

They should then use the correct form, filing category and submission method specified by USCIS.

The expansion is intended to move more of the US immigration process away from paper-based filing.

For eligible applicants, the online system provides a more convenient way to submit forms and supporting documents while managing the case through a USCIS online account.
