EPF Account Transfer is important for salaried employees who have changed jobs and accumulated Provident Fund savings across multiple accounts.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) allows members to transfer their old PF balances to their current account, helping them keep their retirement savings and employment records organised under one Universal Account Number (UAN).
A new PF member ID may be created when an employee joins a different organisation, but the UAN is generally intended to remain the same throughout their working life.
Transferring previous PF balances helps consolidate savings and maintain a continuous record of employment.
Why Should You Transfer Old PF Accounts?
Employees who change jobs several times may have PF accounts associated with different employers. If the previous balances are not transferred, savings and service details can remain spread across different member IDs.
Consolidating eligible PF balances can make it easier to monitor retirement savings, check contributions and manage future claims.
Maintaining a continuous service record can also be important when determining eligibility for certain EPF and pension-related benefits.
Members should first check whether their previous PF accounts are linked to their current UAN and whether the old balances have already been transferred automatically.
If an earlier balance is still missing from the current account, they can check the transfer facility on the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal.
How to Merge Multiple PF Accounts Online
EPFO provides the “One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)” facility for eligible members who need to transfer funds from an earlier PF account to their current account.
Follow these steps:
Visit the official EPFO Member e-Sewa portal and log in using your UAN, password and the required verification details.
Open the Online Services section and select “One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)”.
Review your personal information and the PF account details associated with your current employment.
Enter or select the details of the previous PF account you want to transfer.
Click the option to retrieve the account details and verify that the information displayed is correct.
Submit the transfer request and complete the required OTP verification.
Track the request through the portal’s claim-status facility.
The information requested may vary depending on the member’s account history and the transfer process applicable to the case. Keep your registered mobile number active so you can receive verification messages.
What Happens After You Submit a PF Transfer Request?
After submission, the transfer claim is processed according to the applicable EPFO procedure.
Members can use the online claim-status facility to check its progress and determine whether any further action is required.
EPFO simplified its transfer process through a revamped Form 13 facility introduced in 2025.
Under the revised process, approval from the destination office was removed in most cases after the transferor, or source, office approves the claim.
This was intended to speed up the movement of PF accumulations to the current account.
Once the transfer is completed, check your current PF passbook to confirm that the earlier balance has been credited.
Also review your employment and service details to ensure the previous account has been accounted for correctly.
What If You Have Two Different UANs?
Having multiple PF member IDs under one UAN is different from having two separate UANs.
If two UANs have been issued to the same employee, the issue generally needs to be reported and corrected before the relevant PF records can be consolidated.
Members should inform their current employer’s HR or payroll team and provide the details of both UANs.
They can also contact EPFO through its official support channels and follow the instructions for resolving duplicate UAN records.
EPFO may verify the records and block the previous UAN while retaining the appropriate active UAN.
The PF balance associated with the older account may then need to be transferred to the active account.
Depending on the case, a standard online transfer request may not be available, and additional assistance or Form 13 may be required.
Do not assume that having an older or duplicate UAN means the associated PF money is lost. Verify the account history and follow the official correction and transfer process.
Before changing jobs again, give your existing UAN to your new employer and check that your Aadhaar, bank details and other required KYC information are correctly linked.
These checks can help reduce delays and keep your EPF records in order.
