International passengers flying out of India will soon have one less airport formality to worry about.
From September 1, 2026, the Bureau of Immigration will remove the requirement to get boarding passes physically stamped at immigration counters at international airports.
The move is aimed at making immigration clearance more convenient and shifting India’s international travel process further towards digital systems.
E-Boarding Pass Can Be Shown on Your Phone
From September 1, passengers travelling abroad can simply show their e-boarding pass on their smartphone during immigration clearance.
However, the passport will still be required as part of the immigration process.
The major change is that passengers will no longer need a physical boarding pass specifically for getting an immigration stamp.
So, if you check in online and receive a digital boarding pass, you can keep it on your phone and show it when required.
Printed Boarding Passes Will Still Be Allowed
The new rule does not mean paper boarding passes are being completely stopped.
Passengers who prefer a printed boarding pass can continue carrying one.
However, immigration officials will not stamp the printed boarding pass after the new system comes into effect.
This means travellers can choose between a digital boarding pass on their phone and a printed copy as a backup.
Why Is the Boarding Pass Stamp Being Removed?
The Bureau of Immigration decided to remove the stamping requirement after receiving complaints about the inconvenience caused by physical stamping.
There have also been instances where boarding passes were stamped incorrectly or important information on the document was affected by the ink.
In some cases, this could make the document difficult to read or create problems if it needed to be scanned later.

CISF Had Already Stopped Stamping Boarding Passes
There is an important difference between security and immigration stamping.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) had already stopped stamping boarding passes during security checks several years ago for domestic and international passengers.
The stamp being removed from September 1 is the one associated with immigration clearance.
Therefore, this change is another step towards reducing physical paperwork during air travel.
Travellers Should Keep Their Digital Boarding Pass Ready
Passengers using an e-boarding pass should make sure it is easily accessible on their phone before reaching immigration.

Carrying a Printed Copy Is Still an Option
