Many people nominate their parents or another family member when they start working and then forget to update the nomination after marriage.
Under the EPF Scheme 2026, this could create problems for your family in the future.
The new scheme was notified on June 29, 2026, and includes an important change related to PF nomination after marriage.
Old PF Nomination Becomes Invalid After Marriage
According to Paragraph 44 of the new EPF Scheme 2026, an EPF member has to make a fresh nomination after getting married.
In simple terms, a nomination made before marriage becomes invalid after marriage.
For example, suppose you nominated your parents when you joined your job. If you later get married, that old nomination will no longer remain valid.
You will need to make a fresh e-nomination through the EPFO portal.
Is It Compulsory to Nominate Your Spouse?
No. The new rule does not mean that you must give your entire PF amount to your spouse.
You can nominate an eligible family member according to the applicable rules.
However, the person you nominate after marriage must fall within the definition of “family” under the EPF Scheme 2026.
If a married member nominates someone who is outside the eligible family category, that nomination may also be treated as invalid under the applicable rules.
What Happens If You Don’t Update Your Nomination?
Updating your nomination is important because it can make the claim process easier for your family.
If an EPF-EPS member dies without a valid nomination, the family may face delays and complications while claiming the EPF and EPS benefits.
There is another important benefit linked to the EPF account — the EDLI (Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance) Scheme.
Under EDLI, eligible members have life insurance coverage, and the benefit can go up to Rs 7 lakh in case of the member’s death, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
A valid nomination can help make the process of claiming such benefits smoother for the family.
When Should You Update Your EPFO Nomination?
There is no specific deadline mentioned for making an e-nomination after marriage.
However, it is better not to wait.
You should consider updating your EPF nomination immediately after major family changes, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
Keeping your nomination details updated can help ensure that your hard-earned PF and related benefits reach the right eligible family members without unnecessary complications.
